Why Are My Dashlights and Interior Lights Flickering?

why are my dashlights and interior lights flickering?

Beck & Masten Buick GMC Coastal Bend can help you learn why your dashlights and interior lights are flickering.

If you notice your car lights dimming while driving, it’s most likely due to a battery that’s failing. In the case when it’s not the battery, there are other common trouble areas that could be causing the issue. No matter the cause, it’s imperative that you have the problem repaired as quickly as possible. When your car lights aren’t working correctly, you might become a danger to yourself and other drivers.

The three areas dimming car lights mostly occur are:

  • Interior overhead lights
  • Headlights
  • Dashboard lights

Because the battery is the most convenient item to diagnose, this is where a mechanic will look first. If the battery is bad, bring it to us so we can properly diagnose the problem and get the right parts for your vehicle. While there are cases that result from a failing battery, there are other factors to consider.

A failing light switch, whether it’s the interior light dimmer or the headlight switch knob, should also be considered if you have flickering car lights. In some situations, replacing a worn switch could solve the issue, especially in vehicles with excessive mileage or older cars. If your vehicle doesn’t fall into either category, it could be symptoms of a more significant problem with the car’s electrical system.
Diagnosing these issues can feel overwhelming, so if you’re experiencing any issues with the lights flickering on your car, bring it in immediately. Our knowledgeable technicians will do a thorough diagnosis and provide you with options for fixing the flickering dashboard lights.

Alternator

Lights flickering on the dash may also be one of the signs your alternator is going bad. Think of it like this, you have battery power to start your car, but the alternator provides the power when your vehicle is running. If you own an old vehicle with halogen lights, you may see them gradually get dimmer with a failing alternator. On new cars equipped with HID or LED lights, they may flicker or just stop working altogether.

Bad bulbs or fuses

Bad bulbs or fuses

If the battery isn’t the reason for your flickering car lights, you might be dealing with a failing light bulb. Failing bulbs are an easy and quick fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new LED bulbs.
If your car has a blown fuse, you may be looking at a bigger issue than you had originally anticipated. A fuse dies when there is too much electricity runs through it. For example, if your anti-lock brakes are connected to a 10amp fuse, and the brake system gets over 10amps of electricity, the fuse will fail. In this situation, your anti-lock brakes would fail due to the blown fuse. If there is a fuse that continues to fail, bring your car in so we can diagnose the larger, potentially more dangerous problem.
